Into the Sea

A composition inspired by a piece of music. I chose the song Into the Sea by the Album Leaf as my inspiration. This project’s objective was to create a visual world the audience can look into—keeping the emotions provoked in mind.

Here's a look at my current (very raw) process in my senior studio, "Design, Place, and Social Innovation".
This studio course is one of the Senior Labs in the Spring semester 2013 in the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University. The context for the studio was first proposed in October 2012; at that stage guns were an issue in the USA, but nothing like the high profile social phenomenon — in everyone’s context — that they became post the Newtown Shootings, Dec 16, 2012. The topic of guns was secondary at that time we chose to take the class. That changed with the shooting. Guns at that point weren’t just a part of American life, they were a design issue to be explored. As such in this course we are exploring two phenomena :
1. guns and their social meaning and impact;
2. design’s social and material capacity to enable place-based transformation — scaling from the local to national.Creative Direction2013 -
The Link is a web platform that connects classes and community organizations together. The Link lowers the barriers for each group through easy discovery for partnerships, streamlining the communication, and finding a mode of transportation.
The current education system has neglected students who fall behind or do not “fit” into the narrow box of teaching methods. It has forgotten what the primary goal of education is — to equip students to be contributing, thriving member of society. We believe exposing students to a range of experiences and methods of learning will enrich the quality of education for all. And for some students, these experiences beyond the classroom will spark an interest that could lead them to finding a passion to pursue.

Colloquy is a research application that helps researchers facilitate conversations through the physical exploration of color spaces. Colloquy offers an intuitive platform for participants to begin to verbalize introspection, yielding insights undiscovered through conventional interview methods. The colors created are not meant to be prescriptive, but are to serve purely as a conversation catalyst. With Colloquy's recording capabilities, researchers can easily document conversations for later analysis.

Sea Wind Cemetery is a design fiction looking at the issue of overpopulation and the problem with limited burial plots. Artifacts that prove as "evidence" for a possible future were created including an advertisement poster, charter boat ticket and an online new article from the year 2020.
What if in the future the norm was to be buried everywhere else but on land? It's 2012 and we're already running out of burial plots in bigger cities. With overpopulation in places like New York and Beijing, are there solutions to the escalating prices and crammed experience of burial plots?
What if in the future, funerals took on a more celebratory, seamless, and interactive experience? Sea Wind Cemetery cremates the body and adds it to a special, all-natural mixture of concrete that is made into a sculpture. The funeral includes the lowering of the sculpture in the sea as family and friends watch and release the loved one's "sea sculpture" on a charter boat. During this ceremony, families have the option of including Sea Wind Cemetery's state-of-the-art offerings including choreographed appearances of sea otters, dolphins, sea turtles, or whales to make it a truly unforgettable, beautiful experience. Other offerings also include floating fire lanterns and flowers (which are picked from the Sea Wind owned Seaside Garden) to make the time of loss yet a beautiful time of grievance.Print Design2013 -
The Jill Watson Festival Across the Arts (wats:ON?) occurs annually at Carnegie Mellon University, celebrating the arts. This year, the festival is called "NOISE". I am currently working on the expansion of deliverables for the festival. I've completed designing the poster and bookmarks for the event.
An excerpt from the curatorial statement:
wats:ON? 2013 explores the realm of noise through a variety of analog, digital, and apparatus enhanced sound-music performances.Graphic Design2013 -
This project explores translating dense and dispersed information into meaningful and useful information. For this project, an iPad application prototype and poster were designed. The iPad application is envisioned to be a part of an arts and design educational archive. The app features filters to explore the films in different ways, a macro level view of how the Eames and the videos fit into the timeline of significant events of the world and the Eames' history, and an interactive section that explains the story and significance of the Eames. The poster is 15"x 55".Information Architecture, Interaction Design, Print Design2012 -
Layers of Léger is an exploration of color, visual system, and exhibition experience. Phipps Conservatory located in Pittsburgh, PA served as a fictional client for an exhibition design showcasing the life and works of the French painter, sculpter, and filmmaker, Fernand Léger. Through detailed studies of Léger's color palette, style, mood, and visual elements, we were inspired to incorporate our findings with a modernized and fresh visual system that encouraged the public to learn.

I'm currently heading the design team for TEDxCMU. I've designed and overlooked the visual system for the past two TEDxCMU events: "ImPossible" and "Reinterpretation". My responsibilities included the stage design and print media: logo, posters, shirts, programs, and toolkits. TEDx is an independently organized TED event at Carnegie Mellon University, inviting the world’s most fascinating thinkers, doers, and makers to share their ideas.Event Design, Graphic Design, Branding2011 -

The wooden boxes invite children to interact with them and encourages discovery and learning. Inside each box children will find an event, exhibition, or activity to explore near their neighborhoods. Each box also contains tear-off paper pads with additional information that they can take to their parents. The boxes serve as a tangible and interactive method to encourage children and families open their eyes, breathe in the fresh air, and experience the world around them.Advertising, Graphic Design, Print Design2012 -
During my studies in St Gallen, Switzerland, I worked on a fictional branding and identity project for Säntis, the mountain and Schwägalp, the hotel. Säntis is a major tourist attraction and the tallest mountain in the easter region of Switzerland towering at 2,502 meters. The focus was to appeal to the wide audience of foreigners and natives alike, giving Säntis a modernized feel without losing the tradition and essence of the mountain.Branding, Graphic Design, Photography2012 -
An original game design. We created a board game revolving around a given theme: constellations. Research, user testing, and multiple iterations of 3D prototypes were required to create a functional and enjoyable game. We decided to create the game for a younger target audience that still carried an approachable and sophisticated visual and tactile experience.
